A smoke alarm in the wrong room can be almost as risky as having no alarm at all. The same goes for carbon monoxide alarms. Carbon monoxide is invisible, odorless, and impossible to detect without the right device.


For most homes in the United States, the safest approach is simple: install alarms where people sleep, where they can hear them, and where hazards are likely to start. Smoke alarms should be placed to detect a fire early and wake sleeping occupants quickly. In most homes, that means smoke alarms belong in three key areas:


  • Inside every sleeping room

  • Outside each separate sleeping area

  • On every level of the home, including the basement


For example, a home with three bedrooms on the second floor should generally have a smoke alarm in each bedroom and another in the hallway outside those bedrooms. If the home also has a main floor and a basement, each of those levels needs smoke alarm coverage too.

The Basic Rule for Carbon Monoxide Alarm Placement


Carbon monoxide alarms, often called CO alarms, are required in many homes, especially those with fuel-burning appliances, fireplaces, attached garages, or other possible CO sources.


Common CO sources include:


  • Gas furnaces

  • Gas water heaters

  • Fireplaces

  • Wood stoves

  • Attached garages

  • Gas ranges

  • Boilers

  • Portable generators used incorrectly


CO alarms should generally be installed:


  • Outside each separate sleeping area

  • On every level of the home where required by code

  • Near attached garage access areas when recommended

  • Near fuel-burning equipment, while still following the manufacturer’s instructions


Carbon monoxide mixes with air, so CO alarms do not always have to be placed on the ceiling. Many are wall-mounted or plug-in units. The safest answer is to follow the alarm manufacturer’s listed installation instructions.


Do not install CO alarms directly next to fuel-burning appliances unless the instructions say to do so. Placing one too close can cause false alarms or shorten the life of the device.


Rooms and Areas Where Alarms Should Not Go


Good placement also means knowing where alarms should be avoided.


Smoke alarms should usually not be installed:


  • Directly above a stove or cooktop

  • Inside a bathroom

  • Near supply registers, return vents, or ceiling fans

  • In dusty workshops unless the alarm is rated for that location

  • In garages unless the device is specifically designed for that use

  • In unfinished attics or crawl spaces unless required and suitable equipment is used


CO alarms should usually not be installed:


  • Directly beside a furnace or water heater

  • In very humid areas

  • Near a window or exterior door where fresh air may affect readings

  • In areas outside the listed temperature range

  • Behind curtains, furniture, or other obstructions


Always read the device label and installation manual. A listed alarm is tested for specific use conditions, and the instructions are part of that listing.


Interconnected Alarms Are Safer


In many newer homes, smoke alarms must be interconnected. This means when one alarm sounds, all alarms sound. This is especially useful in larger homes, homes with basements, and homes where bedrooms are far from living areas.


Interconnection may be hardwired, wireless, or part of a listed alarm system. Hardwired smoke alarms commonly include battery backup so they continue working during a power outage.


If one smoke alarm in the basement detects smoke, people sleeping upstairs need to hear it immediately. Interconnected alarms help make that happen.


CO alarms may also be interconnected, depending on the system and local requirements.


Maintenance Matters as Much as Placement


An alarm that is too old, disabled, painted over, or missing batteries cannot protect anyone.


Use this simple maintenance checklist:


  • Test smoke and CO alarms monthly.

  • Replace batteries as directed by the manufacturer.

  • Keep alarms clean and free of dust.

  • Never paint over an alarm.

  • Replace alarms at the end of their listed service life.

  • Replace any alarm that does not sound during testing.


Many smoke alarms have a service life of about 10 years, but always check the label on the back of the device. CO alarms may have a different replacement schedule.

Walk through the home and check each area.


Bedrooms


Each bedroom should have a smoke alarm inside the room.


Hallways Near Bedrooms


Each separate sleeping area should have a smoke alarm and a CO alarm nearby.


Main Living Level


The main level should have smoke alarm coverage, even if there are no bedrooms.


Basement


The basement should have a smoke alarm, usually near the stairs. CO protection may also be needed, especially if fuel-burning equipment is present.


Attached Garage Entry


Do not place standard smoke alarms inside most garages, but consider CO alarm placement near the door from the garage into the home if required or recommended.


Fuel-Burning Appliance Areas


Install CO alarms according to code and manufacturer instructions, but avoid placing them too close to appliances.


A safe home uses the right alarms, in the right locations, with regular testing.
