A crawlspace should not smell musty, feel wet, or leave floor framing dark and stained. When it does, the problem usually started outside the house, under the ground cover, or in the air moving through the space.
Crawlspace moisture is common because this part of the home sits at the meeting point of soil, drainage, foundation walls, plumbing, HVAC equipment, and indoor air. A small weakness in any one of those systems can keep the space damp for months.
The good news is that most moisture problems follow predictable patterns. Once the source is clear, prevention becomes much easier.

Why crawlspace moisture matters
